Chiefs owners’ $900,000 political donations revealed as the $15 billion Hunt family backs conservative causes

Full story

Last year, as the Kansas City Chiefs prepared to face the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59, attention turned to a side of the franchise that rarely dominated game-day discussions. While Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce stayed away from presidential endorsements, the Chiefs’ ownership had a different record on political involvement.

Reports highlighted the Hunt family’s donations to conservative causes, its religious and pro-life positions, and questions about the treatment of players within the organisation. Chiefs owners’ political donations revealed the Hunt family’s conservative ties In February 2025, a report by The Spun examined the political activity of the Hunt family, which owns the Kansas City Chiefs.

The family, led by owner Clark Hunt, had largely kept political matters separate from the team’s public image, but its financial contributions told another story. According to NBC News, the Hunt family, valued at more than $15 billion by Forbes at the time, had donated approximately $900,000 to candidates and committees over the previous decade.

The report said those contributions went almost exclusively to conservative causes, based on federal and state filings. Norma Hunt, the family matriarch, had contributed nearly $500,000 to federal campaigns since 2016.

Clark Hunt, who serves as the Chiefs’ CEO, had donated more than $200,000 to federal campaigns over the same period. The family had also supported conservative positions on religious matters and pro-life causes.

These contributions offered a clearer picture of the owners’ political leanings, even as the team’s most recognisable figures avoided publicly backing a presidential candidate before the 2024 election. Mahomes and Kelce both chose not to endorse a candidate.

Their approach kept the focus on football rather than party politics, a distinction that became more noticeable as the franchise attracted national attention during its Super Bowl run. Chiefs ownership faced player treatment criticism amid Super Bowl success The Hunt family’s political activity was not the only issue surrounding the Chiefs’ ownership last year.

The franchise also faced criticism over its workplace conditions and support staff. In an anonymous player survey, the Chiefs’ ownership received an “F” grade.

The team also received failing marks for its locker room, nutritionist and training staff, raising questions about the experience of players away from the spotlight. Those findings offered a contrast to Kansas City’s success on the field.

Under head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs had established themselves as one of the NFL’s leading teams, winning three Super Bowls during their dominant run. Ahead of Super Bowl 59 on February 9, 2025, Kansas City aimed to become the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowl titles.

The Eagles ultimately beat the Chiefs 40-22, ending that bid. The political donations and player survey brought attention to the people running the franchise, not just the stars wearing its uniform.

While the Chiefs continued to draw praise for their football achievements, the reports showed that ownership decisions and off-field concerns remained part of the wider conversation about the organisation.
