Trichy: Customised food carts have arrived at Race Course Road in Khajamalai as installation work is in full swing for Trichy’s first official food street ahead of its scheduled opening on Nov 1. Trichy corporation has spent ₹30 lakh to complete basic amenities on the 300-metre stretch between Govt Law College and Thanthai Periyar Govt Arts and Science College for the initiative.
The Healthy and Hygienic Food Street (HHFS) is being launched by the district administration through the food safety department, with support from the city corporation. Around 40 electric-powered mobile food pods, each costing Rs 86,000, have been purchased from a Bengaluru-based company.
These carts are being provided to selected traders under a loan scheme with subsidy from District Industries Centre.“Currently, the works of electrification and installation are under progress. The carts will undergo a trial run on October 25.
After checking the system and workflow, the initiative will launch on November 1,” said M Jegadish Chandra Bose, designated officer of the food safety department. Out of nearly 170 applicants, the department selected 40 vendors after interviews, considering factors such as cuisine variety, gender, community and economic background.
The selected traders have been authorised to prepare and sell safe, quality and hygienic food in accordance with Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Mounted on four sturdy wheels, the standardised carts have a compact, fully enclosed box design.
They allow service through a side hatch, enabling vendors to hand over ready-to-eat snacks, fast food or desserts directly to customers in a clean and organised manner. The carts are designed to promote hygienic practices, including proper storage, temperature control and waste management, while creating a uniform and modern appearance for the food street.
They aim to reduce risks associated with unregulated roadside vending. Along the proposed street, paver blocks, street lights, hand-washing facilities and wastewater management systems have been put in place to ensure public hygiene.
Meanwhile, Walkers Association in Trichy has urged the administration to enforce strict hygiene standards and maintain basic amenities before the official launch of the food street.
