Fake cops scam Pinjore retiree of ₹7 lakh

Full story

Panchkula: Fraudsters coerced a retiree into liquidating his wife’s fixed deposit after claiming his identity details were linked to crimes. The 65-year-old Pinjore resident lost ₹7 lakh to men who posed as Delhi Police and CBI officers on video calls and used national-security threats.

Complainant Mohan Chand stated in the FIR registered at the Panchkula cybercrime police station that he had received a phone call on Aug 25 from an individual claiming to represent the telecom department. The caller stated that Chand’s identity card was linked to criminal activity and that an unauthorised bank account had been opened in his name to execute suspicious transactions.

The caller transferred Chand to an accomplice posing as a Delhi Police officer. The fraudster claimed Chand’s ID had been used to sell another ID for ₹2 lakh to an individual named Sandeep.

To reinforce the scheme, the perpetrators arranged video calls featuring individuals in police uniforms,. They claimed to be senior police and CBI officers, instructed Chand to submit a written application addressed to the Supreme Court, and assured him that cooperating with their investigation would resolve the matter.

They promised all funds transferred during the process would be refunded upon inquiry’s completion. On Sept 16, the perpetrators provided bank account details under the name Krishkart Logistics Private Limited and directed Chand to deposit ₹7 lakh.

Fearing legal action, he liquidated his wife’s FD and made the transfer from her Punjab and Sind Bank account. The callers told Chand the money would be refunded within 24 hours and warned him not to disclose the investigation, citing national security concerns.

Chand remained silent until his daughter visited, at which point he disclosed the transfers and realised he was a victim of fraud. Chand filed a report on the national cybercrime reporting portal.

Panchkula cybercrime police registered an FIR on Oct 17 under Section 3.
