Mohali: Intensifying its campaign against drugs, Mohali police checked around 30 chemist shops across the city in the past 48 hours. Police rounded up five persons for questioning during inspections conducted jointly with the drug inspector.
Notices were also issued to several shops over medicines found without supporting documents. The inspections aimed to verify compliance with regulations governing the sale and storage of medicines and check the sale of drugs without valid prescriptions or supporting documents.
The action was carried out at several medical stores in Mataur and other parts of Mohali. Police said drug control authorities had issued notices to several chemist shops, seeking explanations regarding medicines found on the premises without requisite documentary evidence.
Shopkeepers concerned have been asked to clarify the source and legality of the medicines. Inspector Amandeep Chauhan, SHO of Mataur police station, said, “We are checking records and documents related to medicines found during the inspections.
Any violation found will be dealt with as per the law. Such checking drives will continue in the future.”Police are examining the circumstances under which the medicines were stocked and whether the shops complied with prescribed rules.
Five persons are being questioned, and further action will depend on the findings, the SHO added. The drive is part of Mohali police’s continued efforts to curb drug abuse and prevent the misuse and illegal sale of banned pharmaceutical drugs.
Police and drug control authorities are expected to continue inspecting medical stores to ensure compliance with applicable regulations. The drug inspector said chemist shops must maintain proper purchase records, invoices and other mandatory documents for medicines stocked and sold on their premises.
