INDORE: A retired Army havildar allegedly opened fire after a dispute over right of way to a local garba event in Indore MIG area Monday late night. A bullet allegedly fired from his service pistol struck a youth in the abdomen.

The youth, identified as Rakshit, died during treatment on Tuesday. The retired soldier, Neeraj Rahane, was arrested along with his son, Keshav, in connection with the incident.

Though initially booked for attempted murder, Neeraj was slapped with a murder charge after the youth died. The incident took place at Krishnabagh in the MIG area where some residents had gathered for a local garba event.

Keshav, who works at an IT firm in Pune and was back in Indore on a break for the Navratras, got into an argument with some women and girls sitting on chairs, allegedly blocking the way leading to the venue that was hosting the local garba event, police said. As he requested the women to shift and let him pass, they allegedly snapped back at him leading to a hot exchange, police said, adding that Keshav went back home and reported the argument to his father.

Neeraj, who retired from the Army about 12 years back and had since taken up the job of a banking security personnel, allegedly took his service pistol and left home for the colony where the argument took place. Neeraj picked up an argument with people gathered at the spot, police said, adding that he allegedly abused them before firing two to three rounds from his weapon.

One of the bullets struck Rakshit in the abdomen. He was rushed to a private hospital where he died during treatment on Tuesday.

A video, purportedly showing Neeraj flashing his pistol and allegedly intimidating locals at the colony, surfaced on social media in light of the incident. MIG police, including station in-charge CB Singh and other personnel, reached the spot after being alerted about the firing.

Neeraj and Keshav were taken into custody. Police initially registered a case for an attempt to murder, along with other sections.

Rakshit's statement could not be recorded at the time as he was under treatment. However, the murder charge was inserted after the youth succumbed to his injury.
