UPI Fraud in India — OTP Scams, Freeze Steps & How to Report

UPI fraud India: fake collect requests, OTP fishing, remote-access scams, how to call your bank, and report on cybercrime.gov.in / 1930 — never share OTP.

How UPI scams usually look

Scammers impersonate banks, delivery staff, or “IT cell / cyber police”. They ask you to approve a collect request, share an OTP, install a remote-access app, or scan a QR that actually pays them. Real banks and police do not ask you to transfer money to “verify” or “unfreeze” an account.

First 30 minutes if money left

Call your bank / UPI app helpline and request a freeze or dispute with the UTR. Note time, amount, UPI ID, and screenshots. File on the National Cybercrime portal and use the 1930 helpline where applicable. Delay reduces recovery odds.

  • Do not argue in-chat — cut the call and use official numbers from the app
  • Do not install AnyDesk / TeamViewer because a stranger asked
  • Do not “test” by sending a small amount to the same UPI ID

Prevention that actually works

Turn on transaction alerts. Use UPI PIN only on your own phone. Decline unexpected collect requests. For merchants, confirm the name on the pay screen matches the shop.

What ContentVerse India will never do
